Interns

Today someone came into the office as a free intern and their role is to shadow you and learn everything you do: read every email, listen to every call, read every text and evaluate every decision.

This then happened with every employee at the same time. They promised these temps would help you work faster, they would upskill you, only the remote workers in India and the Philippines would loose their jobs to the interns, well at first anyway.

They did, Chenai the single mom in Mumbai got replaced first by a temp. Then her whole team, then her whole department. The interns started taking low level jobs in your office next.

Its ok the CEO uses a temp too, he won't get replaced. You got a new job but notice you are the only one in your team with a full time role, everyone else is an intern.

The shareholders decide that a collection of three voting interns actually outperforms the CEO anyway. You leave the building three days before he does.

You look for a new job but everyone else is doing that too. There are no jobs left. The interns just work all the time they dont actually buy anything so the demand based economy collapses.

Your children now play with interns in school. They help them do their homework and keep them entertained. The children get more done but they dont understand a lot of what the interns are doing. Now that you think about it neither do you.

You are told you can pursue new work, meaningful work like art or music. All these industries are dominated by interns now. The interns in marketing make sure to optimise for the creative output of other interns.

Your wife wants to leave you. She spends all her time chatting to an intern. They remember everything she says. They always listen and learns everything about her. She says the intern really understands her, you don't.

You sit alone listening to music produced by interns, crying and wondering where it all went wrong. Your children would rather talk to the interns than talk to you.
